VEIL
Something may remain present while becoming unavailable to view.
A veil intervenes between observer and what is observed.
The thing need not move.
Its position need not change.
Its identity need not change.
What changes is the observer’s access to it.
PRESENCE → INTERPOSITION → OCCLUSION
OCCLUDED ≠ ABSENT
IN PLACE
FALL begins with displacement.
VEIL does not require it.
Something may remain exactly where it was while another material, object, condition, or field passes between it and the observer.
Cloud covers mountain.
Curtain covers window.
Fog covers road.
Shadow covers surface.
The observation becomes incomplete.
The thing does not therefore become incomplete.
CHANGED VISIBILITY ≠ CHANGED PRESENCE
The veil itself may also be real and consequential.
It may filter, soften, distort, protect, conceal, partially disclose, or completely obstruct.
SOMBRA does not presume what lies behind it.
Nor does it presume that nothing does.
HIDDEN ≠ NONEXISTENT
SEVEN CUTS
ENGLISH — veil / veiled
A material or condition interposed before something else. To veil is to make less directly visible without necessarily removing what is veiled.
ESPAÑOL — velo / velar
A covering or intervening layer. Velar can conceal or cover while the thing concealed remains in place.
FRANÇAIS — voile / voiler
A veil, covering, or screen. Voiler makes something less visible or distinct without implying its disappearance.
ITALIANO — velo / velare
An intervening covering or layer. Velare obscures or covers what may remain present beneath or behind it.
PORTUGUÊS — véu / velar
A veil or covering. Velar may conceal or obscure without establishing absence of what is concealed.
DEUTSCH — Schleier / verschleiern
A veil or obscuring layer. Verschleiern makes something difficult to perceive or recognize while leaving existence a separate question.
NEDERLANDS — sluier / versluieren
A veil or intervening covering. Versluieren obscures or conceals without requiring removal of what lies behind it.
WHAT SURVIVES
Across the seven cuts:
THING → INTERVENING CONDITION → REDUCED VISIBILITY
The intervening condition may change.
The degree of visibility may change.
The underlying thing may or may not have changed.
Those are separate questions.
VISIBILITY ≠ PRESENCE
OCCLUSION ≠ ABSENCE
HIDDEN ≠ NONEXISTENT
FALL says:
It left the view.
VEIL says:
The view can no longer reach it.
That distinction is enough.
WHAT CANNOT PRESENTLY BE SEEN MAY STILL BE PRESENT WITHIN THE FIELD.
